What is a martingale collar and why you should use one?
Sometimes it’s hard to know what kind of collar would be best for your dog, especially if you’ve just adopted a dog. The martingale collar is a good choice for a variety of dogs because it gives you more control and has safety benefits.
A martingale collar fits loosely on a dog’s neck and tightens when necessary. When the dog pulls, the collar tightens and will stay snug around the dog’s neck without chocking the dog. When the tension is released, the collar loosens.
There are several reasons to use a martingale collar:
- The martingale makes it difficult for dogs to slip or back out of the collar. Some dogs have an easier time slipping out of their collars because of their fur texture or the shape of their neck compared to their head. The collar distributes pressure evenly around the dog’s neck rather than concentrating it in a specific area.
- Martingale collars are helpful when it comes to training your dog. The collar will tighten slightly when the dog pulls on the leash, but it will not choke the dog or harm his neck in any way. The martingale collar is a good tool to prevent your dog from twisting or slipping out of his collar when encountering other dogs, distractions, or frightening situations.
- Martingale collars are gentler than choke or prong collars. The collar allows you to give slight corrections without choking or pinching the dog. This is a nice option for puppies, senior dogs, or fearful dogs.
- Martingale collars comes in different colors and styles. The collar can be worn as an everyday collar or can be used specifically for training.
